The colored red ring on the shank of the E256 machine tap for metric coarse threads tells you this tap is a member of the Dormer “Shark Line”, with different colored rings on the shank so you can see at a glance which materials the tool should be used to tap. The red ring on the E256 means the tap is ideal for tapping high alloy steels like tool steels. With a titanium aluminium nitride coating, the service life of the tap is increased and performance is improved when threading harder materials. The E256 is manufactured to conform to the German Institute for Standardization whilst performance and tool life is further enhanced by the premium powder metal High Speed cobalt used to make the tools. The E256 “Red Shark” tap has a spiral point design for threading through holes and is available from sizes M3 to M20.
